The Blackwater Band have become an institution at the Marine Bar, playing every Monday night for the past 30 years. They have built a reputation for being the best source of entertainment in Waterford on a Monday night.
The band take their name from the river Blackwater that flows beneath the Comeragh Mountains in West Waterford where all the band members hail from. Playing Irish music all over the world for over 30 years they are committed to travelling the world to bring song and craic to venues big and small. Blackwater are managed by Frank Lloyd and are available to play for you wherever you are. You will be guaranteed to give your audience a night to remember as they will be brought through the highs and lows of Ireland through the richness of its music and songs.
The band have toured internationally for many years, including America, France, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia and Norway. The band also tour yearly in Germany at sold out venues from Berlin, Heidelberg to Ladenburg and Nuremberg.
Meet the Band
The band members are all accomplished in their various instruments and are lead by owner of The Marine Bar, Christy O’Neill, on guitar and vocals. Christy has played with many bands and particularly well known was Bodhrán. No man has a greater love for music as he plays seven nights a week (day and night) at the Marine Bar. He has released various CD’s, most notably “The 50 Best Irish Pub Songs in the World” which went Gold.
On bodhrán we have Michael Finnegan or best known to one and all as Finn. A master of the bodhrán and very handy at singing Finn brings his own special beat to the music accompanied by the odd story or two. With over 40 years of playing under his belt and again having played for many years with Bodhrán, no man knows the beat of the music better than him.
Caroline King is the only female member of the band and plays guitar, whistle and practically any instrument you put in front of her. However she is best known for her skill on the piano accordion which she plays so effortlessly. She has a beautiful Irish singing voice and sings both in Irish and English. A writer of many songs and music another fantastic musician who can hold her own with anyone.
Michael McKenna is probably the best button accordion player in the world. Words cannot describe what he is capable of doing with an accordion passed down to him from his father who started to teach him at the age of three and a half. An all Ireland winner when young and a world winner as he reaches the peak of his playing. Listenand be amazed!
Canice Neary honed his skills on the banjo in the Irish clubs in England and returned to Ireland a master of his craft. His rendition of Knockin’ on Heavens Door on the harmonica is exquisite and he has a song for every occasion.
Nicky Power on whistles brings the haunting airs to this first class group of musicians. He has shared the stage with musicians like the Chieftans and played his version of the Lonesome Boatman for the Fureys. His control of breath and touch of the fingers enable him to give clarity and feeling to every note he plays. Playing the concert flute to the traditional tin whistle he will thrill your senses with traditional tunes.
The Blackwater Band released CD “Live from the Kitchen”, recorded at the Marine Bar, Pulla Ring, County Waterford and mixed and mastered at Liam Clancy Studios, An Rinn, County Waterford.
The Manager/Booking Agent for the Blackwater Band is Frankie Lloyd.
